For the last one year that I've been freelance writing, I've realized that there are writing industries that pay more than others.
Also, there are freelance writing niches that are saturated while there are those with little to no competition.
Let's be real, you are taking the big scary leap to start your online writing business, and then boom!
You realize every client is looking for a specific niche writer.

How did I find my freelance writing niche?
To be honest,
I didn't have a freelance writing niche right off the bat.
My first project was a history article, and although I love writing about history, it wasn't paying much.
But,
I knew that we all need to start somewhere. During my early months into freelance writing, I did write over thirty history articles for two websites that focus on history and unbelievable facts.
Don't forget that I have a background in business management (purchasing and supply option).
From there, I landed a gig on self-publishing and wrote about book writing software.
I love writing about writing. That is why I blog about it. Eventually, I focused on digital marketing, where I teach others how to market their businesses online.
So, how can you arrive at a profitable writing niche?
1→Use your professional background to find your freelance writing niche.
Did you study finance in college?
You can use the skills you learned in school and be a finance freelance writer.

The best way to approach this is to make a list of courses you took in schools and pick the one that interests you.

2→What is your passion?
It is not uncommon to find people who studied a specific course in college and end up not liking that field.
If this is you, then you can identify the things you love and be a thought leader in that niche.
I know of writers who are experts in industries they never studied for in school.
Elna Cain, for example, has a background in Psychology but writes about digital marketing.
Another example is Heidi Lynne Kurter; she advocates for healthy workplaces through her writing. What's more, she writes for authoritative publications like Forbes and Entrepreneur, among others.
What does this mean to you? It means you can use your passion and find profitable freelance writing niches.

And due to this, finance companies are willing to pump in more money into content creation to enlighten the public on what will happen next after the pandemic.
I'm in a Facebook Group of finance writers, and from the look of things, they have more writing work than ever.
2→CryptoCurrency.
Are you a crypto nerd?
Good for you because it is also another profitable freelance writing niche.
You need to have an understanding of cryptocurrency, crypto mining, and Blockchain.

3→Digital marketing.
Another lucrative freelance writing niche is digital marketing.
Everyone is online nowadays, including your old grandma.
So, businesses are leveraging online platforms to generate sales and increase brand awareness.
Digital marketing content is high in demand, and you can earn pretty well in this niche.
It doesn't come without a struggle, though, you need to learn the nitty-gritty details about digital marketing and have an impressive portfolio.

I did a quick research on finance websites and found so many finance websites looking for guest post writers as you can see in the screenshot below.
Another way is to publish articles on your blog. I always insist you must have a self-hosted blog if you want to be professional.
If you don't have a website, you can publish your work on Medium and LinkedIn. Also, Contena has a section where you can post your work and use them as samples when applying for writing jobs.
Finding a freelance writing niche is simple.
Don't crawl back to your old job because you can't find a freelance writing niche.
